Top Tips: Fear of the dentist

What’s one of the most common things I hear in surgery? “ I hate coming to the dentist.” We are pretty used to being hated by the majority of people. Whether your fear stems from a previous bad experience, a fear of the unknown or just simply someone you don’t know too well all up in your grill, you can do things to improve your experience. My top tips for nervous/scared patients: ⁣

1. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 is 🔑- I can’t stress this point enough, for some reason as human beings when we get nervous we shut down. We don’t communicate effectively and it will only make your experience worse. Speak to your dental professional, voice your concerns. We can’t help if we don’t know. We might seem scary but I promise you our main priority is to ensure you have a comfortable experience. ⁣

2. 𝐀𝐬𝐤 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 - this follows on from point number one but please ask us anything you’re unsure of. Dentistry can be technical and confusing. Clarify the things you don’t understand, clear any confusion and don’t worry if you have to ask more than once. We will be more than happy to explain until you understand. ⁣

3. 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 - I have so many nervous patients who don’t let me anywhere near them in the first session. I always say bring some headphones next time, plug in and zone out. Guaranteed by the second appointment I can carry out all the treatment I need to. The sounds of the equipment can be so much worse than the actual sensation in your mouth. By distracting yourself with some music or whatever you feel like listening to can really help. ⁣

4. 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐡 - this ones simple. The more you look after your teeth the less you’ll need to see the dentist. ⁣

Are there any other techniques you’ve tried or advise? Let me know in the comments! 💗 ⁣

⁣Share this post with anyone that doesn’t like going to the dentist!
